Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
Wet Ingredients
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk
- 1 cup grated apples (about 2 medium apples)
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) maple syrup
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing
Glaze
- 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) maple syrup
- 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml) milk
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your doughnut pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and granulated sugar to combine evenly.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, beat the eggs then add the milk, grated apples, maple syrup, and vegetable oil, mixing well to incorporate all elements evenly.
- Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently fold together until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep doughnuts tender.
- Fill Doughnut Pan: Spoon the batter into the prepared doughnut pan cavities, filling each about two-thirds full to allow room for rising.
- Bake: Bake the doughnuts for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool Doughnuts: Allow the doughnuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the Glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk together until smooth and pourable.
- Glaze the Doughnuts: Dip the tops of the cooled doughnuts into the glaze and place them back on the wire rack to let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
- Use crisp, tart apples like Granny Smith for the best texture and flavor balance.
- Make sure to lightly grease your doughnut pan to avoid sticking.
- If you don’t have a doughnut pan, you can use muffin tins and adjust baking time slightly.
- For a thicker glaze, use less milk; for a thinner glaze, add a touch more milk.
- Doughnuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
