  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk (plus more for brushing)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add butter and cheese: Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and herbs if using.
  4. Combine wet ingredients: Make a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk. Gently stir until just combined.
  5. Shape and bake: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, pat into a rectangle, fold, and cut out biscuits. Place on the baking sheet, brush with buttermilk, and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Serve: Serve warm with butter.
