- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 1/4 cup water
Cheese Filling
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
Dough & Topping
- 1 package refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
To Serve
- Salsa
- Sour cream
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Cook Beef Mixture: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and finely chopped onion, cooking until browned and onions are soft, about 6 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Season Meat: Add taco seasoning and 1/4 cup water to the skillet. Simmer the mixture for 3 minutes, allowing it to thicken. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
- Prepare Dough: Roll out the refrigerated dough on a clean surface. Cut it into rectangles approximately 4 by 6 inches each to create the base for the taco sticks.
- Fill & Seal: Place a spoonful of the cooked taco meat mixture in the center of each dough rectangle. Sprinkle a mix of shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses on top. Fold the dough over to enclose the filling, pressing and pinching edges tightly to seal completely.
- Prepare for Baking: Position the filled dough rectangles seam side down on the prepared baking sheet. Whisk the beaten egg with 1 tablespoon water and brush this egg wash over the tops of each taco stick to create a golden crust. Optionally, sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the sticks turn golden brown and the dough is cooked through.
- Serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm with salsa and sour cream for dipping to enhance the flavors.
Notes
- Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
- These taco sticks freeze well; reheat in the oven or air fryer for a quick snack anytime.
- Add diced jalapeños or black beans to the meat mixture for extra flavor and texture.
