Made with russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, whole milk, heavy cream, and unsalted butter, the potatoes are boiled until tender and then mashed to creamy perfection. This classic American comfort food is easy to prepare and can be garnished with fresh chives or parsley for an elegant touch.
Ingredients
Scale
Potatoes
- 3 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)
Dairy and Seasonings
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Garnish (Optional)
- Chopped fresh chives or parsley
Instructions
- Prepare the Potatoes: Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are very tender and can be easily pierced with a fork.
- Drain and Return: Once tender, drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot to remove excess moisture.
- Heat Dairy Mixture: In a small saucepan, gently heat the whole milk, heavy cream, and butter over low heat until the butter melts and the mixture is warm, being careful not to let it boil.
- Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the potatoes until smooth and free of lumps, ensuring a creamy texture.
- Combine Mixtures: Slowly stir in the warm milk, cream, and butter mixture a little at a time, mixing until the potatoes reach your desired creamy consistency.
- Season and Serve: Season with additional salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mashed potatoes into a serving dish and garnish with chopped fresh chives or parsley if desired.
Notes
- For an ultra-smooth texture, use a potato ricer instead of a masher.
- To make ahead, prepare as directed and keep warm in a slow cooker on the “warm” setting.
- Substitute some of the milk and butter with sour cream or cream cheese for a tangier flavor.
