Ingredients
Scale
Pie Crust
- 1 prepared pie crust
Apple Filling
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3 pounds apples (about 9 cups), cored and sliced
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
For Assembly
- 1 teaspoon water
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Cook Apple Filling: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss everything together, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook the apples until they become tender, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool.
- Prepare Dough: Roll out the prepared pie crust into a 14-inch circle on a piece of parchment paper. Transfer the dough with parchment paper onto the baking sheet.
- Assemble Tart: Arrange the cooled apples in the center of the dough, leaving approximately 2 inches of space around the edges. Fold the exposed dough edges over the apples, gently pressing to seal and form a rustic tart shape.
- Finish and Bake: Brush the dough edges lightly with 1 teaspoon of water and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar to create a glossy, caramelized crust. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before slicing and serving. This enhances the flavors and helps the filling set.
Notes
- Using tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp helps maintain some texture after cooking.
- For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of ground cloves to the apple filling when cooking.
- You can serve the tart warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated gently in the oven.
- Make sure the apple filling is cooled before assembling to prevent the dough from becoming soggy.
