Description

These Easy Oven-Fried Green Tomatoes are a delicious twist on a classic Southern favorite. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, they make a perfect appetizer or side dish. Baked to perfection, these green tomatoes are a healthier alternative to traditional fried green tomatoes.

Ingredients

Scale

Tomatoes:

  • 3 medium green tomatoes, sliced ½-inch thick

Breading:

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • ¾ cup cornmeal
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For Drizzling or Brushing:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
  2. Set up breading station: Prepare three shallow bowls with flour, beaten eggs, and a mixture of cornmeal, panko, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dredge the tomatoes: Coat each tomato slice in flour, dip into the egg, then coat in the cornmeal mixture. Place on the baking sheet.
  4. Drizzle with oil: Lightly drizzle or brush the tops of the coated slices with olive oil or melted butter.
  5. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Serve: Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • These oven-fried green tomatoes pair well with ranch dressing, remoulade, or a drizzle of hot honey.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or air fryer to restore crispiness.
