Description

Delight in the irresistible combination of crispy puff pastry and sweet cinnamon sugar with these Irresistible Churro Cruffins. A perfect fusion of churros and croissants baked into individual muffin-sized treats, these cruffins offer a flaky, buttery texture with a delightful cinnamon sugar coating. Ideal for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack, they are easy to make and wonderfully satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Butter and Wash

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin or line it with muffin papers to ensure easy removal of the cruffins.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Place the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll each sheet until it is slightly thinner, about 1/8 inch thick, to enhance flakiness.
  3. Mix Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly, preparing the sweet and fragrant coating.
  4. Cut & Stack Pastry: Cut each pastry sheet into 4×6-inch rectangles. Stack two rectangles together to create a stack of six in total for maximum flakiness.
  5. Brush with Butter & Add Flavor: Lightly brush the top of each stack with melted butter. Generously sprinkle cinnamon sugar over each piece, ensuring even coverage for a flavorful finish.
  6. Form & Place in Muffin Tin: Roll up each stack into a spiral or log shape, then stand them upright and place them into each prepared muffin cup.
  7. Egg Wash: Beat together the egg and whole milk, then brush the tops of each cruffin with this mixture to achieve a shiny, golden crust after baking.
  8. Bake: Bake the cruffins for 20–25 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown on top, signaling they are perfectly cooked and flaky.
  9. Coat with Extra Cinnamon Sugar (Optional): Once the cruffins have cooled slightly, brush them lightly with more melted butter and roll in additional cinnamon sugar for an extra sweet and crunchy finish.

Notes

  • Ensure puff pastry sheets are properly thawed but kept cool before working to prevent tearing and to maintain flakiness.
  • For an easy cleanup, line the muffin tin with papers, but greasing works equally well.
  • The egg wash is key for a glossy, appetizing crust so don’t skip it.
  • Adjust the cinnamon sugar amount to taste if you prefer a less or more sweet coating.
  • Allow cruffins to cool slightly before handling to avoid breaking the delicate flaky layers.
