Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Marinade
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp soy sauce (for marinade)
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
Vegetables
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ginger, minced
Sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 cup water
Garnish
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp green onions, chopped
Instructions
- Marinate the Steak: In a bowl, toss the thinly sliced steak with cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Allow it to marinate for 15 minutes to tenderize and infuse flavor while you prepare the vegetables and sauce.
- Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, and water until well combined. Set aside for later use.
- Cook the Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak in a single layer and sear for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
- Sauté the Vegetables: Add the remaining tablespoon of sesame oil to the skillet. Sauté the sliced onions, red and green bell peppers, minced garlic, and ginger for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are slightly softened but maintain a crisp texture.
- Combine and Simmer: Return the cooked steak to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour in the prepared sauce and stir well to coat all the ingredients. Allow the mixture to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens and flavors meld.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle the dish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve hot over steamed rice or your choice of noodles for a complete meal.
Notes
- Use flank steak or sirloin as they cook quickly and remain tender.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can add a slurry of cornstarch and water during the simmer step.
- For gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce alternative.
- Adjust sugar quantity to taste based on your preferred sweetness.
- Serve immediately to enjoy the best texture and flavor.
