Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
- 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Main
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the pastry twists evenly.
- Sauté Garlic: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant but not browned.
- Cook Spinach: Add the chopped fresh spinach to the skillet and cook until wilted, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
- Prepare Filling: In a bowl, combine the cooked spinach, crumbled feta cheese, softened cream cheese, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to create a homogenous filling.
- Roll Pastry: Unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over one half of the pastry sheet.
- Fold and Seal: Fold the other half of the puff pastry over the filling to form a rectangle. Press down firmly along the edges to seal the filling inside.
- Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the folded pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Twist each strip gently into a spiral shape to expose the filling.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the twisted pastry strips onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them evenly.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the egg wash over the twists to give them a shiny, golden finish while baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden, puffed, and cooked through. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- If using frozen puff pastry, thaw according to package instructions before use.
- For a stronger garlic flavor, increase the garlic to 2 cloves.
- You can substitute cream cheese with ricotta for a lighter filling.
- These twists can be prepared ahead and frozen; bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
- Serve warm for best texture and flavor.
